As the most anticipated holiday for Muslims worldwide, Eid is always celebrated with joy and festivity. This moment marks the culmination of the blessed month of Ramadan, during which Muslims have been fasting for a whole month. It’s no surprise that some countries celebrate Eid in unique and fascinating ways. Now, let's take a peek at the diverse Eid traditions across various countries!

Malaysia

Our neighboring country, Malaysia, has an interesting way to celebrate Eid. In Malaysia, Eid is known as 'Hari Raya Aidilfitri'. Just like in Indonesia, the homecoming tradition, or 'balik kampung' is an important and defining part of Eid celebrations in Malaysia.

Additionally, Malaysians celebrate Eid by wearing traditional attire called 'baju kurung' and 'baju melayu’. Classic dishes like ketupat, rendang, and lemang are also staple foods during Eid celebrations.

Turkey

In Turkey, Eid celebration is known as 'Ramadan Bayram' or the 'Ramadan Festival.' This three-day celebration is marked with unique traditions and a selection of delightful dishes.

One of the key traditions of Ramadan Bayram is the serving of delicious dishes. A variety of cookies and sweet treats, such as baklava, a traditional Turkish pastry filled with nuts like almonds, walnuts, and pistachios, soaked in a syrup made from sugar, honey, cinnamon and lemon, along with lokum and güllaç, are must-have delights during the holiday.

Another cherished tradition still upheld in Turkey is adults giving cash to children. Children eagerly anticipate this tradition, as they will use the money to buy candies, toys and more.

Egypt

In Egypt, Eid celebration is known as 'Eid al-Fitr.' One common tradition is buying new clothes for all family members. Children, in particular, are delighted to receive nice new clothes.

Additionally, Egyptians also visit public amusement parks as an essential part of Eid celebrations. As a result, amusement parks and other recreational spots are typically crowded during the holiday.

One of the most famous and essential Eid treats in every Egyptian household is kahk. This butter cookies are round-shaped, dusted with powdered sugar and filled with dates or nuts. Besides kahk, another popular dish is fatta, a flavorful meal of rice served with bread, meat and a rich tomato sauce.

Morocco

A variety of delicious and sweet dishes highlights Eid traditions in Morocco. Cookies, such as ma'amoul (dates-filled cookies), chebakia (sesame seeds cookies), are very popular during this celebration. Traditional dishes, such as couscous and tangia (meat cooked in a clay pot), are served as well.

There is also a unique tradition that involves traditional arts and music. After the Eid prayer, a group of people, both young and old, parade through the neighborhood while playing traditional musical instruments like the gnawa or a type of tambourine.  The unique rhythm of this music harmonizes with the chanting of shalawat and praises, sung with great joy.

Eid holiday or Lebaran, is a very special and eagerly awaited moment for Muslims around the world. The joyful atmosphere, the sense of togetherness and rich traditions make the celebrations unforgettable and full of meaning.
